“Wait a second...”10.23 | Brother’s Keeper
That, right there, is meaningful on so many levels! Not only does Sam show and express his deep, inherent trust in his brother. His believe in his brothers goodness. (And that is nothing new and surprising, really. Sam always looked up to Dean. Hero worshipped him. Thinks, Dean is the best person in the world.) But Sam also includes himself in that believe! He says WE! (And that is somewhat new and surprising.) Sam, who always fought against the darkness in himself. Sam, who felt dirty and unworthy his whole life. Sam, who thought himself to be a monster at times. He grew, he learned to accept himself. He learned to distinguish between the demon blood inside him and himself. “This thing on your arm is evil, but not you!” (The demon blood inside me is evil, but not me.) And who taught him that? Dean! Dean who loves Sam too a default, no matter what. They may have had rough rides and some pretty bad moments, but in the end deans actions always have shown Sam that Dean believes in him, in his goodness. (And isn’t there some real serious hero worship going on from deans side towards his brother as well? ) That’s how Sam learned to believe in himself. And that’s how he can say WE ARE GOOD in this moment.
And I think that WE had a much deeper impact on Dean, than a simple YOU would have. Because he may have trouble believing in his own goodness, with the mark and all. But he knows Sam is right above himself. And maybe that is why he couldn’t kill him in the end? Because Sam showed him so much love in this last moments? Let all his goodness and love pour over Dean, despite all his own peril and despair?
So let me conclude with this:
Sam is right. THEY are good. And they are BEST when they are together. They may carry some darkness around with them, given all the things they went through (hell, demon blood, MOC are only a few of them), but they keep each other’s darkness in check. And this darkness practically doesn’t stand a chance against the brightness of their love for each other. Against the brightness of their souls when these two soulmates are together.
