Fic Recs – Wincest and J2

I haven’t done this for awhile so why not? Here are the stories I read this month that I really, REALLY loved.

A Touch of Evil by @nyxocity J2 AU based on the Dexter series. First of all, let me just say that I love nyxocity so much, it’s not even funny. Her talent amazes me. I’m thrilled that she’s writing for this fandom again. Also? Darkly Dreaming Dexter is one of my favorite books ever but she somehow made the concept better? How does that happen?? This is still a WIP (8 of 9 chapters are posted right now) but every chapter so far has been perfect. 

Over the Wall by @cheriemorte J2 prison AU. I think everyone is aware that Cherie is one of my favorite authors AND one of my favorite people. Last time she wrote a new fic, I read it and then went back and read all the older ones again. There isn’t a single story that I don’t love. But this one? It might be my favorite. 

You Show Me Yours by firesign10 PWP Wincest. With Panties. That’s all you really need to know. XD

Games Children Play by prettyslutboys. J2 AU for the spn_cinema challenge. I ADORE spn_cinema stories. It’s my favorite challenge of the year. I hadn’t read this author before but I really enjoyed the story. 

The Curse of the Pig-faced Boy by whiskygalore J2 AU for the spn_cinema challenge. Based on the movie Penelope. Some ABO dynamics. 

Ouroboros by nyxocity. Wincest.  After reading A Touch of Evil, I started going through nyx’s back stories and I realized I’d missed this one before. It’s extraordinary. 

Heron Blue by 

SummerNightmares (BlackDog9314). Wincest. This is also a WIP but the writer has a style that really drew me in. Plus it’s a casefic. GIMME ALL THE CASEFICS. I hope they keep going with it. 

I also reread a BUNCH of leonidaslion stories. Damn, they’re good. Even the ones that never got finished are worth reading. And if you’ve never read Fumbling in the Dark: Love Advice for the Romantically Impaired, you really should. You’ll like it. I promise.

A recent series of serial killer murders leads Jensen down a dark path of romantic messages secretly directed at him. Jensen is undeniably drawn to Jared by something he can’t define, something he’s never felt outside of killing. As the messages from the killer become more intricate, Jensen is pulled deeper into darkness, and unable to deny his attraction to Jared, he eventually finds himself at a terrible crossroads. Can he continue to keep his double life a secret and still discover the killer’s identity? Or will he lose his code and everything he knows he should care about in the process?

I love big bang time. Literally my favorite part of the whole year. Yeah, I know. My name is Candi and I have a J2 AU problem. I AM AWARE. So this is what I read this week:

Wandering Lost by dugindeep (hot sauce). 36K. Loved it. The story has this otherworldly, almost dream-like feel. Jensen is driving a classic truck across the country for his boss and ends up breaking down beside the road. Will he be rescued by a hot, mysterious tow truck driver? If not, I would have been seriously disappointed because come on. The laws of J2 AU are pretty clear. 

Silly Love Songs by NaughtyPastryChef. 28K. Very floofy and smutty until the end which took a surprising turn into angst. Still good though. I’m not really sure how to describe it. 

The Pie that Binds by HermineKurotowa. 29K. Jared is the leader of his city but he’s not great at it tbh. Jensen and his clan live in the woods outside of Jared’s kingdom. There’s intrigue and sex and vikings and hurt/comfort and all that good stuff.

So right in the middle of reading big bang stories, my brain went “Hey, you know what? Go see if xenodike has written anything lately” and I was like “No, brain. I would have heard about it by now if there was a new story.” And my brain was all “Are you 100% positive, dummy? Because you haven’t checked in months.” and i got huffy but went to check and GUESS WHAT. 

Timestamp for Fucking Kodiak, Alaska. Nothing like a timestamp (albeit a short one) for one of my favorite AUs ever to make my day better. And if you haven’t read Fucking Kodiak, Alaska, please do yourself a favor and read it before the author takes it down in a couple of days. It’s so good. 

AND what I’m reading right this minute…

Phoenix by xenodike. 111K. A book-length AU by one of my favorite authors that I somehow totally missed back in April when it was posted? And they’re cowboys? Yes, please. I’m right in the middle and loving it. 12/10. Heckin’ good story. 

Fic Recs

I’ve been doing a lot of reading in the past couple of weeks. Like, A LOT. I go through times when I basically hide in books and fics. Just bury myself in them. So what the heck- might as well pass the savings along to you all. Heed the warnings on each fic- I’m not going to list them all here. 

Wincest:

Do Roses Know Their Thorns Can Hurt? by homo_pink. An AU loosely based on the Time Is On My Side episode. VERY Tim Burton-esque and beautiful. 

The Time Traveler’s Brother by gretazreta. This is an AU based on the book The Time Traveler’s Wife but it follows canon through season 5. It blew me away. I’m not kidding. 

Pick Myself Up Off The Ground by wetsammywinchester. So Paula just goes ahead and publishes this wonderful wincest big bang story without any warning. Can you believe that? The nerve. A simple “HEY CANDI- I’M ABOUT TO POST A PERFECT WINCEST STORY SO BRACE YOURSELF” would suffice. Seriously though, Paula is a great writer and this story is so good. I mean, two Sams and one Dean? YES PLEASE. 

J2:

Beginner’s Luck by bertee. This is a medieval adventure AU that’s so damn funny. Jared is a wannabe adventurer, Jensen is on the run. There are some tentacles involved, a couple of dragons, the usual. 

Fight the Rising Odds by bertee. More hilarious AU goodness. Jensen is the prettiest guy in Olympia and all the gods want him. Jared is his best friend and constant companion who helps him stave off the entitled douchebags. Seriously. Funny stuff. 

My Love is like to Ice, and I to Fire by _tiana_. Listen, I’m not that big into superhero AUs, but this was amazing. Jensen has the power of ice. Jared is all fire. I need this as a movie. NOW.

have you seen him whom my soul loves by veronamay. Have I recced this before? Possibly. I know I read it before but that didn’t stop me from tearing through the whole thing again. Priest!Jensen comes to town and meets Jared who’s supposed to be marrying Sandy. This is scorching hot. Just wow. I think my kindle melted. 

Time of Your Life by sandymg. Jensen thinks he doesn’t need anyone and he certainly doesn’t need love. Then he gets in an accident and starts seeing his former best friend and lover everywhere he goes. It’s hard to explain but it’s lovely. Just read it. 

Put the Heartbeat Back Inside by non_tiembo_mala. An AU based on The Bourne Identity. Jensen wakes up with no idea who he is. Jared is a university student who gets pulled into Jensen’s world. Have I mentioned I love AUs based on books and movies? Because I love AUs based on books and movies and this is a good one. 

The Dizzy Heights series by whispered_story. Jared is left on the Padalecki’s doorstep as a baby and has no idea he’s fae until Jensen shows up and announces that 1) they’re betrothed, and 2) they’re in danger. 

If you want a shorter, sexy story, try Ana’s non-AU fic based on this past year’s ACL. High for This.

Oh yeah and I don’t care much for mpreg but I devoured every single story by Fatebegins. The writing is so strong that I couldn’t stop reading them. I started with Above Us Only Sky and then just plowed through EVERY. SINGLE. FIC. Damn you, Lullys. You were right again. 

Do you know of any fic where Sam is hurt or dies and Dean is a wreck about it? Or J2. Sorry feeling anguishy rn

I feel you. I read a lot so I go through fics pretty fast. I have read some good ones lately, most of them from the SPN Meant to Be challenge. That’s been a godsend. 

Begin to Begin Again  by dugindeep(hotsauce). Future!fic, J2 non-AU. Jensen is very sad after the show ends but eventually he figures out what he needs. 

Heartstrings by madebyme_x. J2 AU where Jared is a hard-living rock star who’s in a bus crash and Jensen is a nurse. This is shorter (~8K) but very good. 

The Lost by Phoenix1966. J2 AU about movie star!Jensen and a case of mistaken identity. This is a WIP but it was just updated and it’s really good. 

The Roommate by ashtraythief. J2 AU that’s very cute and funny and pretty sexy too. 

Jensen’s Choice by Zara_Zee. OH MY GOD, I LOVE THIS VERSE. I would read 100 stories about this version of the guys. Jensen is a rich kid with a dark past who stole money from a motorcycle club and ran. Jared is the VP of that club. Jensen’s past is about to catch up with him in a big way.  Read the warnings but if nothing there bothers you, READ IT. You won’t be sorry. 

And one older fic that’s relevant now because Pokemon: 

Arm in Arm, We’ll Fight to Win by cherie_morte. Pretty much exactly what you think it is. J2 AU that contains the best line ever: “You have a Pokemon dick!” I want that on a t-shirt. 

And one awesome Wincest fic from Linds:

The King and the Lionheart by waywardelle. Wincest curtain fic that picks up after the end of season 10. Sam and Dean settle down in a small town and pretend to be married. Really beautifully done and exactly the kind of story that I adore. 

Spn J2 Bigbang: The Jaybird’s Epiphany

Summary: Jensen Ackles is a physical therapist outside of Los Angeles dealing with an atrocious break-up. He’s grumpy and utterly disenchanted in life until a shy young man comes into his practice with a sprained ankle. They become fast friends and bubbly artist Jared gets Jensen to come out of his shell and get back into the real world. Jensen’s feeling high on life until he learns that Jared’s various injuries aren’t from being clumsy, they’re from the hands of someone else. Jensen falls head-over-heels for Jared and does all he can to help him get out a bad situation. Jensen finds out that Jared has Atypical Asperger’s and that his father is manipulating and abusing him. Together, they patch up the holes in each other and try to find a way to stay strong. Things don’t get better for Jared, and Jensen worries that he might lose him.

Learning the Banda  by formalizing and rei_c. This is a J2 voodoo AU. I normally don’t read fics written in second person. They remind me too much of those Choose Your Own Adventure Books where it’s like “If you confront the scary man, turn to page 16. If you run away down the sunny path, turn to page 37… (turns to page 37) WRONG CHOICE, DUMBASS. Now you’re dead.” But I swear this fic elevates second person like no story I’ve ever read. It’s got some DARK themes though so read the warnings. 

Fucking Kodiak, Alaska by Xenodyke. A J2 AU that is so cute and sexy and funny that I wish I could read it forever. Seriously. 

Cri de Coeur [The Heart’s Cry] by kelleigh (girlfromcarolina). Wincest case fic set in a haunted plantation. It’s based on the short story The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman which is a personal favorite. 

These Violent Delights by dimpleforyourthoughts. J2 AU where Jared’s a waiter who wants to get out of Vegas and Jensen is a mob boss. Based on a Harlequin novel summary- I’m such a sucker for those. Don’t judge me. I’ve loved everything dimpleforyourthoughts has written and this is excellent. 

Cause of Depth by kelleigh (girlfromcarolina) Wincest AU where Sam is a medical examiner and Dean is a cop. This isn’t as long (around 13K) but I can’t resist Sam in scrubs.

When It Crackles by lyra_wing. Wincest casefic where they infiltrate a cult. Oh, and they have to get married to do it. This story is older but I really wanted to read some casefics and this is a good one. Plus, FAKE MARRIAGE TROPE. Always good.

Here are some amazing fics I read this week if anyone is looking for something to read. All of these are long (20K+ words) because that’s pretty much all I’ve been reading lately.  

The Love That Remains by lullys for the 2016 Big Bang. This was a really beautiful, long J2 AU. It starts when the boys are just kids and has a lovely ending.

Every Old Town’s Just Our Past Burning Down by whispered_story. I love this so much. I think I read it before because it’s from the 2013 Big Bang but it was worth a re-read. Post-apocalyptic J2 AU. 

Sunday Maybe Monday by AlexisJane for the 2016 Big Bang. J2 AU with older BAMF Jensen/younger Jared (I think Jensen is 35 and Jared is 20 here). Good stuff by the same author who did one of my favorite stories ever- Gazes Into You (part 1 of the Mr. & Mr. Detective Agency series). 

On A Friday We Call Good by gaialux. Wincest AU- CURTAIN FIC!!!! Man, do I love me some curtain fics. This one is a little painful but still really nice. Dean gets hurt in an accident and loses a leg (not really a spoiler- it’s in the first paragraph or so) but finds something a whole lot more important. 

Under the Hood  by prisparksman. NOT WINCEST OR J2 which was so different for me but it was super good. Dean/human!impala. Pri’s an excellent writer so I’d read pretty much anything she wrote. This one surprised me by making me cry in the end.

Don’t Let it Ride You by kelleigh- a wincest AU that I need to read because the sequel is part of the big bang and I REALLY want to read that. It’s based on one of my favorite short stories.
