Sam? Sam. Hey. I am your flesh and blood brother, okay? I’m the only one who can legitimately kick your ass in real time. You got away. We got you out, Sammy. Believe in that! Believe me, okay? You gotta believe me. You gotta make it stone number one and build on it, you understand?
This is actually my favorite scene of the entire series so far for reasons I can’t even quite express properly. It just… says so much about how much they need each other. Sam needs Dean to stay grounded, to know what is real, to remember that he’s alive. Dean needs Sam to stay with him, to keep it together, to not ever leave him again. They need each other so damned much, and it’s etched so deeply in to them that it’s become every last part of them. And Dean understands what Sam is going through in a way that no other human being ever could. He knows what Sam needs and he knows how to reach into Sam’s head with his words and he saves Sam. Again. Like he always will. For months following, Sam glides his thumb over the scar on his hand, long since healed. It doesn’t hurt anymore, the “real world pain” effect is no longer there. But he still does it, every single time, and it works. Because he hears Dean’s words, remembers what is real, let’s Dean chase away the shadows in his mind like he has his entire life.
